Video 12: Left O-goshi

Rowdy Staff

Give those sweeping feet a rest. Sensei Ronda Rousey is going to teach you about the o-goshi, so tape those fingers tightly. After this edition of Judo Time, even you will be able to throw Travis Browne. Although, he probably wouldn’t let you.

Here are the main things:

1. Grab the waist and a wrist.

Get shoulder-to-shoulder like you’re going to try and test out your stealth skill by pickpocketing, but instead, just grip around the waist. There’s not really a place to keep a wallet inside a judo gi anyway. Make sure you have the sleeve in your other hand.

2. Bring the back leg up and get in your triangle.

Ah, the magic triangle of leverage. Step on up and turn into your opponent keeping your grip. Remember to keep your belt below theirs to solidify your center of gravity and get ready for lift-off.

3. Lean over and keep your head in the direction you’ll be throwing.

If you didn’t have an awesome grip on your opponent, you should actually fall over. That’s how you know you have good leverage. To stay in alignment, keep your head in the direction of the throw and look at your watch. Did you draw one on?

4. Stand up, look down and to your right.

Do these steps all in unison and execute the throw. It may take a while to get it all smooth, but practice makes perfect. Soon you’ll be throwing from sides you didn’t even know you had!

No matter if you’re a lefty (like “Rowdy” Ronda) or start off in an orthodox stance, it’s best if you get in as many reps as you can on both sides. Being ambidextrous with judo techniques opens up so many more opportunities.

That’s why Ronda demonstrates this technique from the right side too.
