Video 40: Drop Ouchi

Rowdy Staff

Drum roll, please. The drop ouchi gari is the judo technique that Ronda Rousey won the Junior World Finals with in four seconds. Let that sink in and prepare yourself before you begin practicing this sacred maneuver. It’s low risk, high percentage, and a great move to have in your arsenal.

Here are the main things:

1. Use lateral skip or skiing motion.

Hop on one foot, hop on the other foot, and do that “Rowdy” Ronda dance. We’ll be using this step to ski down the judo slopes. This is how you’re going to step with the ouchi gari.

2. Use caution when applying drop ouchi.

This will test the ligaments on your knees so proceed with caution. Ronda Rousey wants all your MCLs and ACLs and any other CL you may have intact. Do it a million times to make sure you’re doing it right, but do it carefully!

3. Step to the side with back leg and pull sleeve across chest.

When you have your sleeve grip secured, step to the side and pull in the same direction at the same time. Once you have their arm pulled across your chest, the opponent should make the next part easy for you.

4. Opponent’s pulling reaction facilitates technique.

When you pull the sleeve, your opponent is going to pull back and that’s exactly what you want them to do because it makes the technique a lot easier. You’re going to want to move with the opponent’s reaction and it shall be their downfall. Mwa ha ha ha!

5. As opponent pulls, slide lead leg into drop hook.

Using the helpful slingshot that your opponent is going to give you, slide your lead leg into a drop hook. This is especially where you want to be careful with the ligaments inside your knee, mainly the MCL.

6. Back of knee “hugs” opponent’s ankle.

The crook of the knee should hug the back of your opponent’s ankle and facilitate the sweep. Once you get to this point, it will be very hard for your opponent to be able to stay standing.

7. Make sure it’s super snug!

Ronda Rousey can’t stress this step enough. Keep it very snug and wrapped right up against the ankle. If you leave space or wiggle room, not only can your opponent step out or escape, but you could seriously damage yourself and that’s the last thing anyone wants.

8. Drive with back leg and slide hand down.

As you drive back to that trusty and perfect 45-degree angle, slide your hand down to the leg to make sure your opponent goes down. Now, practice it a million times until you can do it as fast as Ronda.
