Video 53: Hane Goshi Part 1

Rowdy Staff

Hane goshi is one of the neglected and not very well known throws in judo, but it’s similar to Ronda Rousey’s uchi mata so it makes sense to try and learn this technique first. Trust us, you’ll need all the help you can get on uchi mata.

Here are the main things:

1. Try against same-sided opponent.

Once again, use this judo technique when your opponent is on the same side as you. Let it be your clue and think hane goshi.

2. Footwork same as harai goshi.

This is going to be the same footwork as harai goshi and a lot of other throws you may have learned on your judo time journey. Don’t be shy about going back and reviewing Ronda Rousey’s videos.

3. Lift opponent’s leg with bent knee.

Follow your same main steps: Step into the triangle, ballerina step behind, bend and lift, and the new part comes in when you lift up your knee against their leg, which will sweep back and eventually help take them down.

4. Use an “open hip” during lift.

You’ll see why this is a perfect prerequisite to the uchi mata. Keep your hips open to help with the lift as you torque down and drive back. Your hips are going to stay bent, but with uchi mata, it’s going to extend straight.

The next things aren’t steps but just great advice for practice. Use hane goshi with a shoulder seam grip, a deep collar grip, and your around the waist grip.

Let’s take another look at hane goshi and watch Travis Browne get hurt.
