Video 55: Osoto to Harai Makikomi

Rowdy Staff

When you learn more Ronda Rousey judo techniques and master them, it’s time to combine them to really start to open up the game. Here is another combination into transition for when your just osoto doesn’t work.

Here are the main things:

1. Opponent has same-side grip.

You should remember the same-side grip. Secure that elbow and the collar lapel on the same side. Go back and review either the osoto or harai makikomi if you need to.

2. Opponent leans forward to resist back throw.

You’re all locked in and ready to sweep but uh oh, the opponent is resisting and you’re stuck. Don’t battle them there and risk getting caught, bail out and go on the offensive!

3. Hop back with back foot, switch to back grip, turn your body and throw.

Reach over the shoulder where you were gripping the lapel and switch to a back grip. You’ve got them right where you want them. Turn your body and throw with your back leg driving up.

4. Remember to let go of cross grip.

Don’t forget to switch the grips. Even the best of us forget sometimes.

After you put that thing down, we’re going to flip it and reverse it with harai into osoto next time. See, it all connects!
