Video 60: Sumi Gaeshi for MMA Against Opposite-Sided Opponent

Rowdy Staff

Now that you’re armed with a new sumi gaeshi for MMA, let’s prepare for this technique if it’s on the other side. This new Ronda Rousey trick is going to help you when you finally fly from the nest, little judo birdie.

Here are the main things:

1. Opponent grabs a (head inside) single leg.

The setup to this is the opposite of the previous sumi gaeshi. This time, your opponent hits a single leg with their head on the inside. They think they got you this time, but that was their mistake.

2. Stretch opponent to free leg.

You should be able to hit it from right where you are, but if you’re against a really savvy wrestler, this is the trick: Stretch your lead leg life half sprawl and break their grip.

3. Lead leg comes behind opponent’s arm.

After you get your leg out, now you can clear it. Take it and drive it behind the opponent’s arm and proceed with everyone’s favorite part of this move.

4. Back leg slides in.

Slide right on under your opponent’s leg, except this time you won’t end up in a mounted guillotine, but still in a good position.

5. Roll back while controlling opponent.

Roll backward except this time your foot can’t guide in the crook of their knee. When you float over, you should land wrapped up on the side of your opponent.

6. Stretch opponent’s back and shoulder for submission.

You’re almost in a Twister position, popularized by Eddie Bravo, but there are a ton of possibilities from here. Get to side control, take the armbar, go to mount, or just start punching. Dealer’s choice.

Wow. 60 videos. You finally made it to the finish line. Ronda Rousey is super proud of you and hopes that you continue to train and learn.
