Video 66: Sode-Bounce-To Foot Sweep

Rowdy Staff

Once again we dive deep into the trick bag and pull out a little something that dates all the way back to our first Judo Time combos: Ashi waza. It’s all about those pointy judo toes. Here, we’ll incorporate sweeps into our sode combos.

Here are the main things:

1. Sweep can be final throw, or it can create more opportunities.

It’s dealer’s choice here, judokas in training. If it feels like you can get the opponent/uke down with a sweep, get them down with the sweep. If they’re particularly difficult about the whole getting tossed situation, use the sweep to confuse them even more before trying another ippon.

2. As you “bounce” back in, pull downward as you apply the sweep.

Just like we used the bounce in the previous combos to gain momentum for our throw, we can do the same thing here if we decide to sweep. In one fluid motion, bounce back in, pull down on the lapel grip in the same direction of your sweep.

3. Sweep toward toes.

The least amount of friction is in the direction of the toes. The toes are already pointing there. That’s where they want to go, so let’s take them there! Also, sweeping to the side of the foot could mangle the inner-workings of your knee.

4. Sweep can also open opponent up for a third technique.

Sometimes they can get real sly and lift their leg up with you go for the sweep, but you can catch them and when they plant their feet back down it will leave them open for another technique. Ronda ain’t even going to get into it, but there’s a grab bag for you there.

5. Sweep the foot as weight is shifting on it.

If you sweep a foot with no weight on it, they aren’t going to fall. Wait until they are leaning on the foot to attack or until their weight shifts to that foot during ashi waza.

6. Sode hands; up. Sweep hands; down.

You’ve been throwing your hands up the whole time through sode, but you’ll switch directions for the sweep. Don’t want to be pulling your opponent up when you’re supposed to be sweeping them down.

7. Commit to sweep to get results. Throw/reaction.

Fully commit to the sweep. Even if you miss, you can always transition to another technique but you have to go full throttle with the sweep or else the opponent/uke won’t take the bait.

Practice these combo chains and level up. There’s so much more coming.
