Video 69: Sode Bounce to Drop Osoto

Rowdy Staff

Let’s take that sode bounce into an osoto and drop it like it’s hot. You remember the drop osoto right? Hop over and check it out before moving on for a little refresher course—it’ll help you out on this straight up, Ronda award-winning modification.

Here are the main things:

1. Use back step to optimize your reap.

Even though it’s a drop osoto, gain your distance with that badass judo toe ballerina step.

2. Reaching for the hook works as well.

If you’re in the moment and pressed for time, reaching for the hook can work as well, it’s just that a quick step is mostly more efficient. Reaching can cause bring up certain concerns like…

3. If reaching, make sure to drive forward and engage with upper body.

In other words, don’t leave your body behind. Reaching out with your leg while leaning back puts you severely off-balance and could give the opponent the advantage we fought so hard (and through so many analogies) to get.

4. A lazy upper body leaves you vulnerable to counterattack.

Leaning back doesn’t just make you off-balance but vulnerable to other attacks. They could pull you back in and build off that momentum to earn the ippon. Don’t let anyone steal your ippon! So, just make sure your body is following along with your limbs.

5. As hands lock in, slide down opponent’s leg.

We’re all in with this one now. Once your hands are locked into your grip and you’re in position, the reaping leg slides down to the ground and behind your opponent’s ankle. Mwahaha, that is no escape!

5. After drop, drive through with second push.

Drop and drive, Rowdy Ones. Drop and drive. Lean your body into the final push once you lower the reap to the ground. Pull this off and you too may be featured in Koka Kids. Did you know they’re still around?

Keep practicing to achieve your dreams and goals of a full-color spread in a judo magazine by learning the next sode combo.
