Video 70: Sode Bounce to Osoto Maki Komi

Rowdy Staff

Now for something same, same, but different. We’re going to be going into the same bounce to osoto set-up but we’re going to be turning it into a maki komi. As always, take a trek on back through the lessons and do a refresher on the technique if you need to before starting this new Ronda combo.

Here are the main things:

1. This is a spinning technique; not a lifting technique.

There’s no real lift in this throw, it’s just more centripetal force from the super spin. Or speed and spinny-ness as Ronda described it. So, feel free to be loose and wild with limbs flailing around. Just don’t hurt your uke anymore than necessary.

2. Lapel arm lets go and comes over top of opponent’s arm.

Turn inside your opponent off the bounce, let go of your hold on the lapel, but keep a grip of their sleeve. When you spin, allow your other arm to float over the top of your opponent’s that you have secured.

3. Arm wraps around opponent’s arm.

Once your arm wraps around the opponent’s, the choice is yours as to what you want to do with it. You can reach back and grab a back grip, you can snag your own gi, or you can just continue your arm momentum and tuck it in front of you as you spin.

4. Lead leg comes up and sweeps as you fall with opponent.

At the end of the spin, your leg will come up as you’re falling with the opponent and finishes the sweep to land the ippon. You’re basically wrapping the opponent/uke around your equator and rolling onto your side.

After the lesson, keep hanging out for Ronda throwing shade at people who only do maki komi stuff. You can’t just eat ketchup. Or, go ahead and move on to armbars!
