Video 71: Juji Roll

Rowdy Staff

Are you komi-ed out, homie? Well, get ready because after all the throws, footwork, sweeps, and grips, we’re finally about to learn a submission. Ronda is going to demonstrate a juju gatame, better known as the straight armbar.

Here are the main things:

1. Get your “hooks” in.

Well, before you get those hooks in, they start out in the turtle position. It’s called that because the opponent is on all fours and tucking in their head to protect from chokes. Joke’s on them, we’re going to take their arm instead.

2. One leg digs in between opponent’s knee and armpit.

Okay, now get those hooks in. If you’re not hip to that lingo then you want to wrap your legs around their body and squeeze tight. The heel and knee should be trying to connect.

THESE NEXT STEPS HAPPEN ALL AT THE SAME TIME

3. Hands closest to leg posts. Leg pushes through.

Shimmy, shimmy ya at a diagonal across the back and fall towards the mat while taking the opponent’s arm. Plant your hand closest to the opponent’s legs on the mat to maintain control.

4. Knee goes to the back of the head.

Press the shin on top of the opponent’s neck and fall on the side until you’re behind them. This forces the opponent’s hips up and controlling the hips means controlling the body. Trap the arm and secure it against your thigh while using the free arm to help with the rolling.

5. The free hand grabs opponent’s leg.

Don’t do a rainbow pull. Pull the leg straight across the face. Now you can hook the leg with your foot which locks them in and with the free hand, you can secure the other leg. Oh, they’re trapped now.  Your toes do all the work.

6. Fall to the mat and look at their butt.

Butt. Haha, no giggling. This is serious! Pull their legs over your head and the rest of the body will follow. Before the back is on the ground, the leg comes over the head. This is the position that will probably look most familiar to you. This is the moment right before the final execution.

NOW THESE STEPS WILL BE DONE INDIVIDUALLY

7. Cross feet, pull opponent into you, and open knees.

Smother their face with the pit of your knees while making sure to have that arm you’re attacking completely secure. Securing the head, just like securing the hips, controls the rest of the body.

8. Grab arm, pull in, and trap foot with scissor.

Ain’t nothing to it but to do it now. Break any grip they have left by triangling the arm and fall towards the head, hopefully resulting in the glorious pitter-patter of tapping. It shouldn’t take any muscle.

9. Once back is straight, bridge at the hip.

Go from perpendicular to straight and bridge. They should already be tapping unless they are stubborn like Miesha Tate! Hey, he said it, Ronda didn’t.

But what happens if for some reason the armbar isn’t as perfect as Ronda taught you? Don’t worry, there’s a video for that too!
