Video 77: Ronda’s Mom’s Choke

Rowdy Staff

Ronda doesn’t use a lot of chokes because she claims that she has weak wrists, but to quote Admiral Ackbar, we think that’s just a trap. Regardless, the type of choke she has in her arsenal (that she wants to show, at least) is a gi choke, so make sure you all get your gi on… or at least a coat!

Here are the main things:

1. Slide lapel grip deep across opponent’s throat.

Dig your arm as far up and around on this grip as you can. It’d be really embarrassing if you did your little flippy-flip and just landed on the other side of your opponent for them to pounce on you.

2.  Pull opponent out to throw them off balance.

Jerk the person you’re attacking out of their turtle base to throw them off balance but to also give you more room and a better angle for your forward roll. Keep a hold of that deep lapel grip! That’s the whole part of the choke.

3. Step over opponent, grab farside leg, and do an ukemi roll.

This next part looks complicated, but it really isn’t once you slow it down and do it a couple of times. Gravity is really doing all the work here. Thanks, science! Step over the opponent and don’t even plant your foot, make sure on your roll forward you secure a grip with your free arm in the crook of the opponent’s knee.

4. Slide leg grip out to heel, lean back, and torque wrist.

Once you are in prime choking position, slide the grip from the crook of the knee all the way to the ankle like you’re putting them into a banana split. It also looks cool in addition to it being even more painful! Chances are, they’ll be worried more about the “curtain closing” than their hamstring.

Of course, you can transition to the armbar from here as well! Drill this until you’re choking and armbarring fools left and right (literally), and then you can move on to the juji squish roll next.
