Video 14: High Grip

Rowdy Staff

Holy cow. A graduation into intermediate judo is a big deal. Moving up a level can be intimidating. It’s important to remind yourself that you made it this far, so you deserve to be here. Plus you have the best teacher ever, Ronda Rousey! Now it’s time to learn the high grip.

Here are the main things:

1. Slap to grip seam at opponent’s shoulder.

This is just like the basic judo grip, except instead of your lead arm grabbing the collar, you’re smacking their shoulder Stockton style. What up, Nick and Nate Diaz? Ronda also gave them some judo pointers once upon a time. Make sure your other hand grips the inside of the opposite sleeve.

2. Grip sleeve at seam.

Slapping the opponent’s shoulder should leave your hand landing right along the thick seam of the judo gi sleeve. Grip onto that seam like you’ve grabbed a confused and probably slightly angry Travis Browne.

3. Don’t try this if they are much taller.

Scratch that, don’t imagine that you’re grabbing Travis Browne. Most likely the opponent is too tall to be able to use this grip on. If you’re feeling “Rowdy” you can try though. Always challenge yourself.

4. Turn out hand to “make a table.”

With a strong grip (with your expertly-taped fingers) on the seam, turn your wrist up and lift the gi off your opponent’s shoulder, creating a tight pull that guarantees control on even larger attackers.

Armed with a new grip and Street Fighter sounds stuck in your brain, Hadouken your way on over to the intermediate waist grip.
