Video 8: Osoto Gari

Rowdy Staff

Ronda Rousey’s first-ever throw she learned was the osoto gari, or the major outer reap. It only makes sense to start there on this judo journey. Rousey is left-handed—”southpaw” for you MMA fans—so just keep that in mind.

Here are the main things:

1. Step at a 45-degree angle.

Once fingers are protected and comfortable with the basic grip, grab a partner and step out at a 45-degree angle. All judo throws are going to be executed on that angle. Imagine it like an ‘X’ with your opponent in the middle: The Danger Zone.

2. Look at your watch and answer the phone.

Step and pull at the same time. Your arms and hands fold in towards your face like you’re looking at your watch while telling someone on the phone what time it is. If it helps, draw a watch.

3. Place all your weight on your front foot to free up back leg.

Lunge out farther than shoulder length apart. Weight on the back leg should be very light with most of it supported by the front leg.

4. Pull opponent onto one leg.

With one hundred percent of your weight on your front leg, the opponent should be off-balance and able to pull onto one leg. Only one step away from learning the first Ronda Rousey throw!

5. Sweep low (at ankle) for maximum leverage.

Bring your hip through by stepping up with your back leg, placing your foot down at the opponent’s ankle. Remember: Push a door on the knob, not at the hinges. As the heel goes up, the head goes down.

Pay close attention to Ronda Rousey’s particular little things and don’t make fun of her kicks. The next throw will be the ouchi gari.
