Video 9: Ouchi Gari

Rowdy Staff

The next Ronda Rousey judo throw is the major inner reap or the basic ouchi gari. Ouch! Get ready to intercept the legs with one of the most important transitional throws in judo, and be prepared to do it a billion times.

Here are the main things:

1. Ouchi gari: Make a big ‘O’ with lead foot.

Draw an ‘O’ with your toe. Not only is it fun to say out loud, but it helps with being able to execute the judo technique. It’s kind of like swimming but you’re not moving. Your opponent will be though.

2. Ballerina step: Lead foot steps forward, back foot goes behind lead heel.

Step forward with your lead leg on the ball of your foot. The back leg should step up to join the lead foot right behind the heel.

3. 3 point ‘triangle’ weight distribution.

With the opponent’s legs shoulder-width apart and your feet one behind the other out in front, it should make a triangle. This Bermuda triangle is about to make the opponent disappear.

4. When back foot lands, take weight off lead foot.

Only keep weight on one foot at a time. As soon as the back leg matches up with the heel, the lead leg steps through the opponent’s legs, right through the triangle.

5. Drive opponent back at 45-degree angle.

Remember the ‘X’ in the last video and that every judo throw is off of 45-degree angles? Good. With the new ballerina steps, drive right into the opponent at an angle while tripping at the ankle of their leg.

Do what “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey says: Practice this a million billion times. When you get bored of it, do it a million more times. Then, move on to the traditional ko soto gake.
