Video 6: Standard Right Grip

Rowdy Staff

With a tight judo gi secured by a snug belt, fingers taped, and break falls mastered, it’s time to actually grab somebody! Don’t go around Ronda Rousey judo throwing anyone yet though, we have to learn the basic grips first.

Here are the main things:

1. Strong side (arm & leg) forward.

Like the old saying goes, put your best foot (and arm) forward. Whichever way is natural and feels strongest is the stance to start with.

2. Grip hand with sleeve to outside.

Grab the collar and underneath the sleeve of the hand you’re closest to. Now you’ve got Travis Browne right where you want him.

Not right-handed? These steps are the same for each side but Ronda whipped up a quick video for you lefties.
