Video 22: Rousey’s Ko Uchi Makikomi

Rowdy Staff

Ronda Rousey’s ko uchi makikomi is a little different than her mom’s modified version. Same same, but different. But, still same. Luckily, with both versions of the Rousey family makikomi in your arsenal, you’ve got a leg up on the competition. Literally!

Here are the main things:

1. Instead of an “F U grip,” hug opponent’s leg you are hooking.

While the “F U grip” is awesome and totally cool to say, Rousey does the opposite. Instead of uppercutting underneath the arm, she fakes going up and goes down to hug the leg. You may have to watch that “Rowdy” Ronda psych-out a couple of times.

2. In judo, if you score an ippon (full point) the match is over.

If you just so happen to be an MMA fighter trying to utilize this in your repertoire or a BJJ-player mixing in some judo techniques, be wary that this gives up your back. However, in judo, this is a match-ending technique so all the more reason to totally go for it. Total commitment!

3. A great “off the grip” attack.

This is a great technique to use when you’re just snatching up your first grip. As soon as you get control of one of the opponent’s arms, you’re free to dive in like a wrestler’s double leg takedown. Practice a lot though, it’s going to take some time before you can execute it in a fluid motion like the Rousey video.

4. Grip on the inside of the sleeve.

Pro tip: Grab on the inside of your opponent’s sleeve instead of the outside so that it’s harder to escape or for them to turn into you and stop the judo technique before it’s started.

The big differences between Rousey’s way and her mom’s way are the uppercut fake out to leg hug, and the arm wraps all the way around into the crook of the opponent’s knee at the same time as your leg.

Now that you’ve makikomi-ed all your homies, move on to the hooking osoto!
