Video 26: Foot Sweep to Ouchi w/ Different Grips

Pat yourself on the back before you grip an opponent’s judo gi, you did so well combining sweeps into throws that Ronda is showing you more. Much more. Follow Ronda Rousey’s video for this triple header judo technique tutorial. That’s right, folks. Three for the price of one!


Here are the main things:

1. Use a deep back grip for this combination.

Snatch up the back of your opponent’s gi and grab that sleeve. This time the throw doesn’t come easy. So, tease the sweep on the other leg which will distract the opponent and then inner reap that other leg. You will not be denied!

2. One-sided (cross) grip.

This is a judo grip Ronda Rousey hasn’t shown you yet but that’s easy to implement. Grab the elbow of the gi sleeve just like in many other grips, but this time instead of grabbing the opposite lapel, grab inside the lapel of the same side you’ve secured the arm. From there, it’s the same. Get them thinking about the sweep and then take that osoto.

3. Shoulder slap grip!

You know Rousey loves this grip and you should too. Remember to give yourself some space. Secure the arm at the elbow then slap that seam. Get your fingers around that thick fabric and attempt the sweep. Due to the stance, you’ll have more of a ballerina step to cover the distance after the ankle tap.

4. Slide shoulder grip down opponent’s body.

Did you remember to slide down your grip without “Rowdy” Ronda telling you? That’s okay, you don’t have to do it, but Rousey prefers to do it so you probably should too. Once your opponent is controlled and you’re executing the judo technique, let grip off of the seam and drop it to take control of the opponent’s hip.

Holy crap! That’s surprisingly a lot to process. Practice all your combos, grips, foot techniques and splicing them all together like your dropping a judo mixtape.
