Video 30: Drop Morote Seoinage

Rowdy Staff

Don’t be so quick to get up too soon. You should have caught on by now that every throw has different versions and variations. It’s just part of Ronda’s mission to groom you into a judo badass. So, let’s move on to the drop morote seoinage.

Here are the main things:

1. Can use standard or same-sided grip.

It shouldn’t have been that long since you were practicing the morote seoinage, so choose whichever grip is best for you. Remember, same-side grip has a sleeve secure and you’re gripping the lapel on the same-side instead of the opposite.

2. Same-side recommended. (Less elbow strain)

While either grip works, you may want to listen to Ronda’s preference here. All these drills and practicing during judo time could prove hard on your joints, so save your elbows and use same-side grip!

3. Push opponent away to provoke desired reaction.

Convince your opponent it’s a good idea to go forward with a little judo reverse psychology. Pushing the opponent back will force them to redistribute their weight and work towards an advantageous position, which forces them to move forward. It’s like a Jedi mind trick.

4. Use whole body for push.

Don’t just shove them with your arms, it will leave you open for a counter and isn’t efficient. Open your elbow up and push on both your opponent’s shoulders.

5. Push also adds momentum which aids throw.

When you push, not only does your opponent want to come forward, but it kind of gives your body a slingshot action to prime up for this throw. So, drop down and send that opponent flying for the ippon. The “boing” sound effect is totally optional but also really fun.

You’re almost ready to reach the advanced level! But before that boss music starts to play, “Rowdy” Ronda has some off the grip judo drills to teach you.
