Video 33: Sumi Grip

Rowdy Staff

Now, we’re getting to the nitty gritty! Hours of Ronda Rousey judo time have passed and hopefully, even more time has been spent practicing and drilling. If you’ve stumbled upon this section too soon, trek back until your power level has increased. If you’re ready, here is the advanced sumi grip!

Here are the main things:

1. Cross grip (opposite hand) the sleeve.

This grip is great if you have someone taller and you need to break them down. You’re also a true wrestling fan if that DX theme music suddenly popped into your head. This time, the opposite hand grabs under the sleeve. Rousey knows this goes against all you know so far, but this is the big leagues.

2. Pull arm across body and against chest.

With the grip secured, pull the uke’s arm across your body almost like you’re forcing them to reach into your pocket. They’ll be bent over and you’ll be to the side and up against their back. This is where the next step comes in.

3. Grip cloth above far armpit.

There will be a little teepee of judo gi that peaks up just underneath the armpit. No matter how tight the gi is, this should always be there. Grab for that seam and your shoulder should be lined up with their shoulder.

4. Bend them over by leaning on shoulder and sitting.

Don’t try to pull them down. That would take away all of the beautiful leverage that you just gained. With your shoulder against their back and their nearest arm secured with your grip, squat down and that will bring even the largest opponent’s down to your level.

5. Place leg on inside and “pop leg” to gain advantage.

Most people you’re fighting aren’t going to be able to deadlift you, but once this grip is secured they’ll have to lift your whole body weight in order to get out. However, to gain even more leverage, place your leg on the inside and straighten it, which “pops” their knee out. Their leg is forced to move back and you’re in full control.

You’re probably thinking, Ronda, this grip is great but how do I even get there? You’re in luck, that’s what we’re going to cover next.
