Video 37: Double Sleeve Grip

Rowdy Staff

Moving on to another defensive grip. This is going to be similar to the last one, but this time, you’re going to follow along with Ronda Rousey and grab the sleeves of the opponent instead of the lapel.

Here are the main things:

1. Considered a defensive position, attack quickly!

Set up your grip on the inside of both of the opponent’s sleeves and push their arms back. Once again, this is a defensive position. Whether in competition or in a real life combat encounter, you must move fast and don’t delay.

2. Grip toward the bottom and keep palms out.

Remember, flip those wrists and keep palms out flat. This prevents your opponent from rushing in on you and controls their arms. However, preventing the opponent from attacking is a double-edged sword of sorts.

3. Must attack from this grip!

Since they can’t attack, you’ll end up with a penalty in about 3-5 seconds in competition. They can get a penalty too if they do not attack, but you’ll get a penalty before them. Either way, both of those reasons are more than enough for you to create action. Transition from this grip and execute.

You won’t be the only one getting double grips, judoka. With all the badass moves Ronda has taught you, your opponent is going to want to prevent you from attacking.

Let’s learn how to break some of these grips.
