Video 42: Double Sleeve Osoto

Rowdy Staff

Double sleeve grips happen. As you know from previous Ronda Rousey instructionals, there isn’t much time to dilly dally. If you ever get there and are successfully nullifying your opponent’s attack, this a cool judo throw to transition to.

Here are the main things:

1. Step forward with far leg and cross opponent’s sleeve.

You’re all set up with the double sleeve grip and the clock is ticking. Step across the opponent’s body and drag that far arm with you to get them all tied up.

2. Pull far sleeve and “look at watch.”

It’s a flashback all the way to the beginning of judo time. Simply look at your watch in order to get into the right position while pulling the opponent’s arms across. You’ll be looking at your own, but at this point, the opponent’s “watch” should be in view as well.

3. During this action, drive near elbow into opponent’s far armpit.

Don’t overshoot the opponent’s arm when pulling them over. The elbow should drive near their far armpit with the blade of your forearm shoved up against their arm. This pulling and pushing at the same time creates friction.

4. Hook near heel: into opponent’s far knee and throw!

All of this from here on out should be familiar territory for you and just like any other osoto. You’re in position, so hook that leg, pull, twist, and throw.

5. Try pulling down to get upward reaction.

If you’re having a little trouble or just want to get your opponent to help you a little bit after gripping up, pull down to try and instigate a slingshot reaction from your opponent and use that momentum to help with the technique.

This next judo move might make you hungry. It’s going to be a kosoto gake combo. Do you want fries with that?*

*Fries are sold separately and not included with Ronda Rousey’s kosoto gake combo.
