Video 47: Oh (My) Goshi

Rowdy Staff

This is Ronda Rousey’s super special Oh (My) Goshi that she made up on the spot to keep from getting evicted by winning the Swedish Open. Other than sentimental meaning, this is a badass throw that uses the laws of physics to throw even the largest opponent.

Here are the main things:

1. This is always left versus right.

Keep this one in mind if you ever end up in a position where you are side-by-side to your opponent. This judo technique was literally made to be executed in this position.

2. Use during a stalemate.

Putting one leg in front of the other over and over again can get old. In the dangerous game of judo footsie, there can also be dire consequences. Don’t be on the wrong end of the consequence and use Ronda’s throw.

3. Don’t leave any space!

The key in this is to leave no space of any kind. Grip their sleeve and maintain control while reaching around and getting a tight hold onto the opponent’s/ uke’s belt.

4. Get your hip below the opponent’s hip and lock them in.

You’ve heard this many times before: belt below belt. The friction of the gi, the tight grip, the leverage you’ll create on the side all combined will astound you with what comes next as if it is pure magic.

5. Shift weight to far leg and lift.

Bend your knee slightly and shift your weight to the far leg and pull your opponent up by your grips and voila: Lift off. All of the opponent’s weight should be supported all on your hip, whether they’re Travis Browne or not.

6. Bring back leg and lift the other to drive opponent down.

You may be able to hold them there for a long time but there’s no reason to keep them there, so throw that sucker. If your opponent starts wiggling in fright or trying to stop the throw and takes you off balance, you can always take them back with a suplex.

Master this signature Ronda Rousey throw before tossing yourself into the harai goshi sweeping hip.
