Video 51: Harai Makikomi

Rowdy Staff

This next throw Ronda Rousey is going to show you has a lot of benefits and will help you out in many different scenarios. Whether you’re up against a giant, looking for something to throw off the grip, or just out of ideas, harai makikomi is a versatile tool to pull out.

Here are the main things:

1. Great against heavyweights.

Sometimes you’ll be in a David versus Goliath scenario and some judo techniques aren’t always as practical as others might be. The harai makikomi is a perfect throw for much larger opponents.

2. Also great as an off the grip attack.

Another great aspect of this judo technique is that it works well with no setup. Master these steps and movements, and then you can start throwing it off the grip.

3. Use same-sided approach and start with sleeve grip.

Use this move when you’re on the same side as your opponent or practicing with your uke. Snag that sleeve and get ready to Tasmanian Devil up in this piece. Seriously though, this is a hard and fast technique.

4. Throw arm over while turning.

You can grab the back of the gi on your way around, you can do all sorts of stuff, but Ronda Rousey suggests just throwing the arm completely over and using that momentum to help throw the opponent as your back leg hooks theirs after the ballerina step.

5. Follow opponent all the way down, landing on top.

You keep hold of that arm and follow the opponent straight down to the ground, landing on top of them for extra damage. This isn’t a nicey-nice throw. Be mean.

6. Don’t hold back, 100% commitment.

There is no such thing has a half-assed makikomi. The harai makikomi is sudden and heavy, so do it and Rousey proper justice. Total commitment, just like you’ve had throughout all this judo time.

7. Also, try it with a lapel grip instead of sleeve.

When your opponent is gripping you, they are holding on to the arm for you so no need to grip the sleeve. Just grab their lapel and work the steps from there to get the throw on your opponent.

Finally, you’re about to learn one of the most popular throws in judo: The uchi mata!
