Video 58: Sumi Gaeshi (Against Same-Sided Opponent)

Rowdy Staff

So, you’ve drilled the sumi gaeshi a hundred times but all of your practice has been on the opposite side. That just won’t do. Ronda Rousey is going to teach you how to do it from the other side.

Here are the main things:

1. Opponent should be bent.

In order to get your grip and be in a good position for sumi gaeshi, you’re going to have to get your opponent to bend over. Step to one side with your standard grip and do what you can to get them over.

2. Elbow applies weight to opponent’s head.

Don’t try and use your arm strength to keep your opponent bent. Get your elbow on their neck and use your weight over the weight of their head to keep them in a bad position.

3. Grab gi on opponent’s mid-back.

Once they’re bent over, now you can reach out and grip the back of their gi. Now you’ve got the sleeve and a grip on their back and they are staying put.

4. Fake a forward throw for a reaction/distraction.

With the same-side sumi gaeshi, it’s important to fake forward before going back. If you don’t, they’re just going to sprawl on you and make you look dumb. Don’t look dumb! Get your reaction first before you sit into the sumi. We’re just going to lie a little bit with a turn of the hip.

5. Back leg slides between opponent’s legs.

The rest is just like you’re used to. You’re going to baseball slide deep between your opponent’s legs with everything gripped up to send them toppling over.

6. Other leg guides opponent over.

Don’t forget to use your other foot in the crook of their knee to help guide them over and sprawl out.

Our judo journey has nearly come to an end, so we have to leave on a special note. Take that gi off and let’s learn a technique specifically for MMA.
