Video 68: Sode Bounce to Osoto

Rowdy Staff

Here in the dojo, we take what we’ve learned and always build upon it. These pesky opponents keep blocking our sode so we have to keep coming up with new ways to counter that. Now, we’re going to bounce back into an osoto.

Here are the main things:

1. Engage your arms.

Keep those arms gripped up and pulled in tight like tiny T-Rex arms. Flex on these fools, literally. As in flex your arms and keep the hold locked up.

2. Keep contact with your opponent.

You’ll need to stay in tight with your opponent. You don’t want to bounce out and leave your arm behind because it will create a large gap between you and your opponent. You’ve got them right where you want them, don’t lose your leverage.

3. Hands stay locked up by your face.

Wow, remember the look at your watch move? This is a lot like that. Once your hands are gripped on and the opponent is secure, lock it down. Your core and hips will make the move after this. Keep the arms with you, which will bring your opponent with you and thus, the victory!

4. Place all weight on support leg.

When you bounce at your 45-degree to get ready for the sweep, shift all of the weight to your supporting leg. You’re going to be on one foot for a moment so you want to make sure your foundation is solid. Especially for the torquing that’s about to go down.

5. Left shoulder: Down. Left foot: Up. Roll over left shoulder.

Rip that left shoulder down as your left foot raises up to guide your opponent to the ground (or the uke to the well-placed crash pad). Remember to roll over your shoulder and tuck your head.

Hey, don’t bounce off too quick, students of the dojo. Justin Flores shows off his version of—well, it’s not exactly the same throw but… Okay, so it’s an ogre osoto. Or is it a sode bounce-hook step to an osoto?

Figure that out before trying out the next modification we’ve got coming up right here.
