Video 78: Juji Squish Roll

Rowdy Staff

Sure, it may sound like some delicious and saucy bite of sushi you could order at a restaurant, but the juji squish roll will save you if your opponent tries to crush you to prevent your beautiful armbar attempt. Then, feel free to go get sushi after you win your competition.

Here are the main things:

1. Hook your opponent’s far knee and go out the backdoor.

You’ve locked on your armbar, but the opponent has stacked you up so you can’t extend for the submission. No prob, you’ll just have to make the room you don’t have with angles. Take your arm closest to their butt, hook around the knee, and use it to turn into them going out the backdoor.

2.  Grab the far heel, pull it over your head, and roll opponent to their back.

With the arm still trapped and laying on your side, keep everything tight and your foot securing the back of the opponent’s head. Grab the heel of the leg you hook and pull it over your head and behind you, then bring your leg that was pinned to the ground along with you and guiding the opponent into armbar town.

Do it slowly at first and then work on your speed as certain details are committed to memory.

Go through the same steps for no-gi, except remember there are no pants for you to grab onto, so be extra careful in not only staying tight but grabbing the crook of the knee and wrapping your whole grip around the ankle instead of just pants.

Now, with the squishy stuff out of the way, Ronda can teach you your first juji drill!
