Video 19: Back Grip Ouchi Gari

Grips, sweeps, and foot techniques, oh my! Ronda Rousey is building judo warriors all over the planet and perhaps beyond with judo time. More tools are getting added as Ronda teaches the back grip ouchi gari technique. Check out the video and remember what you’ve learned so far!


Here are the main things:

1. Reach over the top of opponent’s shoulder and grab mid-back area of gi.

This is the same grip as used in the last Ronda Rousey video. Reach all the way up and over the opponent’s shoulder with your lead hand and grip in the middle of their shoulders. This is a happy place grip. You’re so in control! Just remember to act quickly.

2. Use your head!

Be mean and smart. Turn your head into your opponent’s jaw. It disrupts their balance, obscures their vision and gives you leverage in the direction that you’re going to take your opponent in for the judo sweep.

3. Use extreme stance with lead leg forward to acquire high grip.

Step back wide in order to get at a good angle to properly put on that high grip.  It will also help you lean into the opponent’s face with your own head. When you step up, pull the sleeve you’ve got secured between your safely taped fingers with your other hand at the same time.

4. When backstepping, drive forward and don’t lean back.

Don’t let your weight go back. If you turn one way or the other or get off balance, you’re going to get countered. Remember what Ronda said about looking stupid? Don’t make yourself look stupid! You got this. Now, drive through.

5. You can also let go of the lapel to hug the leg.

Keep in mind that your leg is wrapping around the crook of the knee to complete the sweep, your foot isn’t arching and sweeping at the ankle like in previous Rousey videos. To help you, you can let go of the back grip on the judo gi to grab the leg, but only if you’re positive you’ve got the takedown!
