Video 20: Modified Ouchi Gari

Rowdy Staff

Remix! You’ve mastered the ouchi gari, back grip ouchi gari, now Ronda Rousey is going to teach you a modified version of the judo technique to mix it up every once and awhile. Practice it, learn it, and keep it in your toolbox.

Here are the main things:

1. Lift and clamp lapel over opponent’s shoulder.

This time, instead of gripping the back of your opponent and trapping the arm by sliding your arm down, their own judo gi is going to do most of the work for you. Slap that seam, grip the lapel, lift it up and pin it down over the shoulder just like in the Ronda Rousey video.

2. Lean head in direction of throw.

It’s all about angles and leverage. Mostly, it’s all about 45-degree angles and you always having the leverage. If you don’t have leverage, you ain’t got nothing! Let your head literally guide you in the direction you’re going to throw or sweep your opponent.

3. Your head nudges opponent’s head back.

What did we say before? Be mean and smart. Use that noggin like an uncomfortable battering ram for your opponent. You don’t want to headbutt them, but push their head back with your own to keep them off balance and to stay in control. Yeah, “Rowdy” Ronda likes that.

4. You can also turn your head to lapel side.

While you want to make sure not to lean back or to the side in any way and get countered, you can turn your head to the lapel side if it is more comfortable or you can’t get a good head placement. Play around with it. Feel out what’s right for you.

5. You can also let go of the lapel to hug the leg.

Once you have control of your opponent’s arm by pinning back that judo gi lapel, you can always let go of it and drop your arm to secure a hold around their hips to help and guide the takedown. Make sure to do it in a fluid motion and that you’re in control at all times.

Great job! You’ll be moving on to advanced judo time in nothing flat. Get ready though, next is Ronda Rousey’s mom’s ko uchi makikomi. That makes the judo move super special.
