Video 24: De Ashi to Osoto

Rowdy Staff

As a student of Ronda Rousey’s judo time, a lot of tools have been picked up and some cool tricks have been learned. Now is the moment that Ronda starts to put the things you’ve learned together. We hope you’ve been practicing because you’re going to be combining ashi waza and osoto.

Here are the main things:

1. Use foot sweeps to create opportunities for throws.

Oops, you’re not in a good position for the throw you want. Let’s change that. Hopefully, you’ve practiced ashi waza a million billion times like Ronda instructed you to do because it’s totally going to come in handy right now. If you want to try and just use it for a sweep you can, but “Rowdy” Ronda’s video has a more devious plan.

2. This combo applies to left versus right stances.

While you should be prepared for any scenario or position, this sweep to throw in particular is for a left stance squaring off against a right stance. So, this is how you’re going to learn the judo technique for now.

3. Foot sweeps can change an opponent’s stance.

In order to not get thrown back by the sweep, the opponent is going to have to step and reset their stance. You’re sweeping in order to get that foot to move which incidentally sets you up to engage the osoto. It’s like chess, there are levels to this.

Following through on that sweep with your leg planted, step through to that magic 45-degree angle. Look familiar? Look at your watch while answering the phone because you’re in the osoto zone! This should mean you’re opponent is on the ground.

You just took an osoto non-friendly situation and turned it into an osoto friendly one. Kickass. Let’s learn to do the same thing with the foot sweep to ouchi.
