Video 25: Foot Sweep to Ouchi

Rowdy Staff

Next, we’re going to make your opponent think what we want them to do seems like a good idea so that they work with us unknowingly. Yeah. That explanation might be even more difficult to understand than the foot sweep to ouchi Ronda is about to teach you.

Here are the main things:

1. Ko uchi gari: Minor inner reap. O uchi gari: Major inner reap.

These rhyme, they go together, it’s like a cute couple. These are two judo techniques you’ll be going back and forth from over and over in your judo time journey, so get used to it.

2. Against same-sided opponent, their stance can be an obstacle.

Sometimes you want to do an ouchi but the opponent won’t always be cooperative. Their foot is in the way, you’re getting overextended if you do an ouchi, it’s a bad angle, so our job is to make the opponent do what we want as we convolutedly noted in the beginning.

3. Ko uchi can remove their front leg defense.

Sweep the leg of the opponent like you’re going to throw them the opposite way. It’s like a Jedi mind trick. It will force them to remove their front leg defense and adjust. Now you have them right where Ronda Rousey wants them to be for the follow-up attack.

4. Follow up with ouchi gari.

Once you get that sweep, follow up with your ballerina step and look how familiar this all is! With the leg out of the way, you can feel free to move right in and execute your ouchi gari. Don’t forget to check out the ’90s VH1-style pop-ups for different sides.

You’ll want to get as familiar with all this as possible because not only will it benefit you in other Ronda Rousey video lessons, but next up we’re going to practice it with different grips.
