Video 46: 3-Hit Combo

Rowdy Staff

Even though you’re advanced in judo time, you’re not ready for the whole “shebam, “so we’re going to dip your pointy judo toes into this Ronda Rousey combo string. This one isn’t that bad. Remember the o soto to ko soto? We’re just adding a sweep.

Here are the main things:

1. Everything leads to something!

There’s never not an answer. The question is, can your opponent/uke think of the answer fast enough? If something doesn’t work, transition. If your opponent has you in a bad grip, counter it. Never give up. Never surrender.

2. Start with opposite side.

Once again, this is best if you’re right facing their left or if you’re left facing their right. What time is it? That’s right, ko soto time. Or to be more specific, psych out with the o soto and then go for ko soto.

3. This combo is useful when opponent’s foot is in the way.

We’re adding one extra step to the o soto/ko soto combo: The foot is in the way. So, add the little sweep, step into your o soto position. If you don’t get it? Plant the foot down instead of picking it up, sweep the leg, and execute ko soto to sweep the other one.

Ronda Rousey will say this a million times but practice this a million times. You’re in advanced judo time student now and this is the closest to starting to simulate sparring or true a judo match.

After putting in the hours, challenge yourself more with advanced hip throws.
