Video 67: Sode Bounce to Kouchi

Rowdy Staff

There’s a veritable slurry of tsuris. The combos keep leveling up and this time we have a sode bounce to kouchi. No downside to this one, folks. Throw the line out there and get a reaction. If they bite, they’re done. Now, let’s get out there and go fishing!

Here are the main things:

1. Hands drive down.

The sode gets blocked so you bounce out and come back in. Use that momentum to pull yourself in with your grips and then drive their arms down. That’s reeling them in.

2. Back foot steps in next to front foot.

It’s the return of the badass, pointy judo toes. Step your back foot up to the front when you come back in from the bounce to set up your kouchi sweep. This is where all that practicing and those reps doing ashi waza pay off.

3. Sweep foot as hands come down.

As always, it helps to take advantage of our vast library of techniques you had to conquer to get to this point. It may help to go back and review kouchi. Keep everything fluid. Drive the hands down as you sweep their lead leg. Use the movement of your opponent to your advantage.

4. Foot sweeps past you.

Stay in your lane. You need a lane to sweep to generate fluid power of motion and so you don’t fall over yourself. Once it hits, you can fall on top of your opponent or set them free. We’ll call that a catch and release.

5. Benefit: Opponent must move lead leg.

The opponent (or your friendly neighborhood uke) already moved the leg you’ll be attacked to originally block your sode. Use every movement to your advantage even if the original purpose of it was to give you a disadvantage.

6. Lead leg is opponent’s defense, so move it back.

Taking out that leg is in your best interest after they’ve thwarted your attack. Since you make them move, you’re free to take that leg out of the equation. If the kouchi fails, there is always another back-up and a back-up for that and so on. Always have different lures and baits!

Ronda’s Judo Time still has more bounce than ’90s rap going on. Do the Electric Slide to the next lesson where we’ll be bouncing into an osoto
