Video 29: Drop Seoinage

Rowdy Staff

After mastering the ippon seoinage and the morote seoinage, get on your knees. No, humble student of the Ronda Rousey judo program, this doesn’t mean you have to beg, it’s just how the drop seoinage is done.

Here are the main things:

1. While turning 180-degrees, drop on your knees.

Just like the previous throws, get your grip and set everything up the same. But this time, instead of turning the 180-degree and throwing your opponent over your shoulder while standing, drop to your knees. If you have bad knees, make sure to do this slow.

2. Aim deep between opponent’s legs.

Don’t just drop straight down, but drive backward and—if you can—slightly through your opponent’s legs. Not only is this going to give you some great leverage and anchor your weight behind the opponent, but it does something else we get into in the next main point.

3.Going to force opponent’s arm between their legs.

Dropping down below and underneath the opponent will help drive their arm you have securely gripped onto through their legs. They’ll be bent over and in an awkward position. A position which leaves them vulnerable to execute your judo throw.

4. Have “live toes” not “dead toes.”

No, this doesn’t mean make sure your toes don’t go to sleep, although that is a pretty good idea. What this means is to not stick your toe out and lay the top of your foot flat on the ground. Stay on the balls of your foot.

5. Push off! (Full extension and turn)

Use the balls of your feet to push off, fully extend like a dangerous judo frog and turn to complete the throw. It even makes a good “off the grip” attack!

Being this far along in judo time and knowing that these Ronda Rousey videos always have different variations, move on to the drop morote seoinage.
